moving to savannah in 2010.
hi everyone i'm looking to move to the savannah area next march from knoxville,tn. my brother just got stationed at fort gordon and i'm wanting to live close to him but also the beach. i've been reading some of the posts and i'm little worried now about the crime. i'm not dead set on savannah so if anyone has any suggestions i'm open for them. i'd like to stay within 2-3hrs of fort gordon but very close to the beach. i'm 30 and will be living alone unless i find a roommate. i'm also worried about the job market i have my AA degree for pharmacy tech & medical asst. any info you have will be greatly appreciated, thanks.

savannah is a great town for the medical field. IMO it is the only thing savannah has going as far as young professionals, HOWEVER, there are people with BA/BS/MS out of work right now. I wouldnt move without having a job lined up. Also consider Hilton Head, although it is a much older crowd. keep in mind the likelihood of your brother deploying. If that is the only reason you are moving, you might be wasting your time.

The crime here is like any other city with a similar population. People tend to over exaggerate this subject. I live near downtown and ride my bicycle around, walk and even go for runs at night and its fine. Just use common sense as you would anywhere else and you'll be good.

Please can anyone give me some candid, straight-forward insights into the Tatemville neighborhood in zip code 31405 near godsells street. Saw a property that perfectly meets my requirements, but I need to get a sense of the area before I make the trip down to see it. Specifically, i am interested in knowing about schools, safety issues, proximity to stores, churches, diversity, etc. i think it is zoned for the following schools:
Elementary School: Haven Elementary
Middle School: Derenne Middle
High School: Beach High
Thanks!!

Huh? What are you talking about? I've lived in Savannah for nearly 20 years. Check my history before you go assuming things.

You'd be close to a lot of grocery stores and shopping but it's not a very desirable neighborhood (to be completely pc).
Many of the homes on Godsell St. back right up to the I-516 bypass. Wouldn't be a great place to live, because of the noise.

We might be of help to you. We are looking at moving back north next yr. We live on Wilmington Island (10 minutes from Tybee Island & 10 minutes from downtown Savannah). Wilmington Island is a place that a lot of people try to live in as it is such a nice area. Crime is not a problem in our area as in some other areas of Savannah. We will be selling our house (3 bedrm/2 1/2 baths, master/main floor)ourselves. Ft Gordon would probably be about 2 1/2 hrs from Savannah. There is always a need for people in the medical field here in Savannah - I know several people that work at one of our local hospitals that might be able to give you some in site into a job if you are interested.
