Think of empty space as a wine rack that is filled with bottles from the bottom to half-way up the rack. I know it's a bit confusing to think of "empty" space to be half-filled with wine-bottles, but anti-matter is confusing stuff. If you take one of those wine bottles and move it to the empty part of the rack, you will have both filled an empty part of the rack and left an empty spot in the filled part of the rack. The bottle above the middle of the rack is a "particle" and the empty spot below the middle is an "antiparticle". If you move the bottle back into the empty spot, you've annihilated the particle/antiparticle pair and are left with empty space again.
Antimatter is made of antiparticles.....the antielectron(positron) and antiproton. Matter is made of electrons and protons. Antimatter and matter will annihilate one another completely if they come into physical contact. Our Universe is predominately made of matter because for a still unknown reason there was a bit more matter relative to antimatter after the BIG BANG.
