Furthermore, what we all say to each other on an elevator is called "phatic communication". And yes, I do pretty well with Trivial Pursuit.

Probably because no one wants to touch those buttons any more than absolutely necessary!

Elevator buttons hotbed of germs--study | TheMedGuru

According to researchers, though toilet seats are considered filthy because they are crawling with millions of disease causing germs, the innocuous lift button touched by many people every day harbors nearly forty times more bacteria.

You can find Fecal Coliform bacteria on anything, which means that result is pointless. We know our world is crawling with bacteria. We've found them in places they shouldn't even exist, like in heavily radiated rooms, the bottom of sea-floors, and on toilet seats.

Irrelevant finding.

I've discovered that when entering a 'new' elevator or standing in the wrong space, finding the Open/Close buttons takes longer than does the door to make up its own mind.

When in a familiar elevator, I do usually make use of those buttons. It appears that most don't know or care. I would know that, not from their lack of button use but because I know the person.
