DNA and RNA. It's basically a way of passing information. It makes the development of complex life (and correspondingly, intelligent life) an inevitability.

After that, most of the big technological breakthroughs do not come from inventions, but from changes in outlook and perspective.

In the last four-thousand years or so, the biggest "invention" is skeptical, analytical thought that was created in Ancient in Greece and honed in Ancient Rome.

Coming in a close second is the invention of the scientific method. It makes it easier for an "average person" to make important discoveries.

So most important inventions,
1) DNA
2) Western, analytical thought
3) Scientific Method
