I would say the printing press, as others have stated. I think there was a show on the History Channel several years ago and their opinion was that the printing press was number one, I think.

I have to agree. Without electricity, most things are useless.

All it takes is a sustained power outage, to help anyone understand just how reliant we are to electricity.
