I waste as little as I can. Not only does my power go off, but my surge outlet goes off.

It’s interesting the posts and the different ideas of what is best, all of them sound logical, however I leave the pc on and the monitor goes to sleep.

I allow maintenance to run at night on the pc. I don’t worry about the amount of electricity that is used because it is a small amount. I worry about the life of the pc being shortened because of the temperature changes that would otherwise take place with the on off each night. I also know that it is important to allow for a reboot. So every other week I will signoff of the pc and have it gracefully shut down and power off for about two hours, after which I reboot and memory is restored again.

I personally think that the heat difference is more of a factor in extended life. A cold pc getting powered up and reheating is harder on electronic parts and may shorten the life of the unit.

I turn all off at night except the fridge. Everything should be unplugged during a lightning storm.

Wow, other than my Dad, I never knew anybody who would actually pull the plug on electronics when not in use. I always thought he was crazy and would argue with him, "Dad, nobody does that!" I stand corrected 'cuz people in CD do it, too! I'm sure my Dad is in heaven now saying, "I told you so!"

foma... you have no idea... I have turned into the proverbial father/home owner - standing aghast, watching as the meter is spinning like a whirlpool, sucking my dollars up the line; flipping lights off when noone is in the rooms; unpluggin TV's every night; hollering to turn the water off... I need help...
