Default What exactly did Steve Jobs do that made him such a genius?

I never really understood what he did. Did he design the internals of a computer or cell phone or what?

No.....none of that. He knew what people wanted and knew how to get people to build it. Big secret of management. You don't need to know how to do everything, you just need to inspire people who do know how, to do it for you.

He had imagination and managed to design and market products that appealed to snobs (during the first couple of decades).

He was more about desire, determination, and incredible ingenuity. Plus he had something a lot of young people don't have today...

A work ethic.

His signature accomplishment is that he brought to market (but didn't invent) the first personal computer with a graphical user interface, like the ones that most of us use today.

Google "Reality Distortion Field". Steve was able to convince those around him that they were going to change the world (and they often did). He had meticulous attention to detail too, there are lots of stories about that floating around.

Bernie Madoff was just as talented as Jobs, at all the things that have been mentioned above. Desire, determination, ingenuity, imagination, work ethic, convincing people to work for him, knew what people wanted and knew how to get people to do it. Madoff is just less revered because he made less money, which is all that counts for unbridled admiration.
