they had a monkey controlling a robot arm years ago to feed itself. And they hooked up a person to a computer that could move a cursor and browse the INTERNET (he was paralyzed from the neck down).

One reason it has not gone mainstream, and most people will never hear about it for a while, is it raises some very difficult questions that our leaders have no answer for.

Already, we are seeing jobs being destroyed by technology faster than they can be created. What happens when the pace accelerates? What do you tell someone when there simply are no jobs for humans to do?

When that point hits, capitalism is over. The question is, what replaces it? I have no idea, even socialism requires people to work. How do you keep people with nothing to do from causing mischief? Especially if the social safety net is gone.,,

According to people in the field they will reverse engineer the brain down to the molecular level by 2023 at the latest, possibly as early as 2019. That is well before the date Ray thought it would be done by as he predicted 2029 which is why I say the singularity will actually begin to occur in 2030.

But will they instantly know how the brain works from the moment it's complete? I have a feeling it will take years of observations and then testing on animals and humans to see if what the project shows is true.

Oh and the video you asked for is on page 33, on the robotic limbs (Luke Arm)

This was not the breakthrough.

60 minutes did a show on the monkey, they had it in this show as well. The breakthrough was this was the first time this was done on a human.

You are correct about the internet I remember seeing that now. However even it was not as advanced as this and how fast this is advancing is amazing.

This is a very good question. Although I don't think our politicians even understand this is coming yet to be honest. I mean I am quite politically active in my city, one that been hard hit by technological unemployment, and when I bring it up most people look at me and have no clue what I am talking about until I talk about the steel mill then its like a light goes and they are like wow I never thought of that.

Now you know why its called the singularity! No one knows.

Well the surgery was done in 2012. I think this was a rebroadcast of a earlier 60 minutes show. I just did not see the first run.

Good question. From what I read it wont be instant but it will be very fast. Plus its not a all or nothing. What they are learning on the way to completely reverse engineering the brain is already helping technologies like Siri.

This will happen long before the singularity hits. They are already talking about putting the self driving cars on the road. Imagine if that takes off, how many jobs could be lost.

IBM is rolling WATSON out to call centers. How many people in this country have boring repetitive jobs that could be easily done by a robot like WATSON? What about WATSON plus 5 years?

The job apocalypse is much closer than we can imagine, and few are prepared for it.

I agree with you there. No one is safe not even doctors. I do think there is a answer but I honestly don't know what it is. I do think we are looking at a total paradigm shift in the economy in the next 30 years and maybe just maybe the monetary system is about to go the way of the dinosaur. Well we might be bringing back the dinosaur!

Edit: That is one reason why I think the singularity will start in 2030. The 2045 date Ray Kurzweil argues is correct , its just the engineering date, but not the one most people will recognize as the start.

And Honda has Asimo which will likely take the job of receptionists away from people.
