If I were a scientist, I'd wear the **** out of that thing. It's a symbol of your mental superiority, of the journey you've been on, the work you've done, and your contribution to humanity! Wear that beautiful white coat with pride!

Worked in a lab.
Never wore a coat.

Am a doctor.
Ditched the coat as soon as I was out of residency. It's hot and cumbersome and useless.

Don't even own one.

I used to have to wear a lab coat at work. I wasn't a Dr. or a Scientist but the coat was the same. I could wear it wherever I wanted. I wanted to wear it at work and that was it.

I liked the pockets and I still like wearing jackets with pockets because I got used to having that.

I am pretty grossed out when I see doctors or techs walking around after work with their scrubs at the grocery store, airport or in a restaurant, for instance. What is what that? They come from an area where they wear scrubs to protect themselves from spills and drips of god knows what, then think it is OK to walk around in public in the same clothes. I sometimes wonder if the scrubs are worn just as a "look at me, I am doctor" statement.....

Certainly depends on the type of lab. Anyone working with potentially infectious or other dangerous materials should leave the coat and their inflated ego in the lab so as to not endanger the public.

My friend worked in an orthopedic research lab and one of the surgeons she knew used to wear his scrubs in bars so he could impress women with the fact that he was a surgeon. Personally if a guy tried that on me I would be turned off.

I'm a chemist and I would never want to wear my lab coat outside the lab simply because I would rather the chemicals that may be on it stay in the lab and not get anywhere else. Also nothing screams pretentious more than wearing a lab coat out in public just to show off my job and education.

I do not wear mine outside of work. The idea is that the coat serves as a barrier between my clothing and other people's germs. It goes in my house only to go straight into the washing machine.
