Either I'm really knowledgeable or those questions are 5th grade level at best. I didn't even graduate high school (GED, then later an A.A.S.)
I'm interested in science, but I don't recall referring to anything other than common sense when answering questions like whether a laser focuses sound waves or not...
I guess the statistics really show more about a general lack of common sense rather than a lack of scientific knowledge. If the questions dealt with things like valence band photo-emission in laser application, then we'd be taking a scientific quiz.
So I tested your theory and tried this out on my kids. My oldest child is a 5th grader so I used his answers here.
He got 10 out of 13.
He got these wrong:
Which gas makes up most of the earth's atmosphere? He answered Hydrogen (at least he knew it wasn't oxygen).
Which gas do scientists believe causes temperatures in the atmosphere to rise? He also answered Hydrogen to this (must do better).
Which natural resource is extracted in a process known as 'fracking'? He guessed at Diamonds (never heard of fracking).
I was fairly happy he knew 10 out of 13 - and he did actually know the others, they were not guesses. At age 11 he scored 63% better than the public (obviously he selected 'high school or less' for level of education). Must improve his knowledge of climate change though.
I got 12 out of 13 got the one about lasers wrong, must not have been paying attention. LOL.
As for fracking, the only reason I know that one is because of a series of stories on NPR about earthquakes in the mid-west being cause by fracking, and a discussion of what it is, etc.

13/13, but the last question with fracking I would not have got if it was multiple choice, I would have said oil. That one's not one they teach in school, that's a mainstream media question... since fracking in North Dakota has been talked about quite a bit.
I am definitely under-educated and was guessing the whole time, still got 12/13.
I missed the electron/atom question.
My answer to the gender and age questions were the only ones I was certain on.
