Interesting. A lot of people think we already know everything about what is below our feet. As a geologist, I can attest that this isn't so. There is still a lot to learn.

Come on, Harry. This latest confirmation is news. The article is titled Iowa impact crater confirmed. Did you dismiss the confirmation of the Higgs Field with discovery of the Higgs Boson as old news since the field was initially proposed 50 years ago?

Some people don't get dry humor. An event that occurred 470 million years ago is "old" news by definition.

IIRC, the LHC didn't directly detect the HB, just evidence consistent with it existing in congruence with existing theory, so yeah, in a way that is old news as well. Use a corollary - I make a theory that Marylin Monroe used Scott toilet tissue in 1957. After fifty years of research and building a giant machine, I come up with the fact that Scott toilet tissue was in a bathroom she visited. I announce that I am now 99.99% certain that she used Scott toilet tissue and make a big news release to justify the cost of the giant machine I built. Is what I revealed about the possibility that MM had a bottom and used Scott toilet tissue somehow NEW news???

Well, it evidently did knock a piece off of the Higgs field, which was news. confirming what might be there.
