A public conveyance that runs on rails instead of on wheels. Generally located in cities. They used to have an overhead electric line that the conductor had to get out and switch whenever he needed to reverse direction. Later they had underground electric lines. Limited in scope but certainly convenient to city travelers.

When I was in Vienna, I rode these on a daily basis and enjoyed every minute of it. Loved to stand at the very back and watch the people.

Also very cheap. Paid a minimal amount for a monthly pass that put me on buses, streetcars, and the railway system anywhere within the limits of Vienna.

I take an electric streetcar almost every day.

The #34 Trolley Baltimore Avenue to City Hall.
