I'm a NYC resident. I currently have an iPhone 4S with Sprint. I had sprint for 9 years. My contract expires on May 1. I never liked the idea of breaking contracts and paying extra money for phones so that's why I decided to wait until my contract expires to shop around for new phones.

I had a family plan that I shared with someone that comes out to $150 a month which is about $70- $80 a month per person depending on the taxes. The person who I shared my line with contract expired so that line was turned off. (She wants a new provider and I want a single plan). Now my bill comes to about $120 which includes unlimited everything, insurance, taxes and city employee discount. Because I have a 4S I have 3G. Sprint's network coverage/ phone service is horrible! The customer service is great and they work with you if you have issues but I can't deal with the slow speeds. I know if I upgrade to a 5s I will have LTE and 4G but I fear that if I upgrade the service will still be slow. That's why I thought about switching.

I went to T-mobile last week just to price things. The rep told me that if I want to switch they will pay my contract fee (which I don't because my contract expires in a month) and I would have to deposit $380! Then for the "upgrade your phone every year" plan I would pay $110 a month for unlimited everything plus new iPhone every year. And they will only give me $60 back for my 4s! I don't know how good T-mobile service is so I'm terrified of paying $400 to join only to have bad service again.

I haven't looked into Verizon or AT&T yet but going to stop by those stores next week to see what they can offer. The last time I checked they were the most expensive but have better coverages.

My goal is to have a plan with unlimited data and text. I roughly use about 6-7 GB a month so a data plan with 8 GB is ok. I don't care too much about minutes because I don't use them that much plus I have a house phone. I do want to try one of those plans where I can upgrade every year. I don't know anyone who has those kinds of plans so I can't get any first hand experiences.

I would stay with Sprint but the service is too slow. I don't know if upgrading will give me super fast speed. I live in Brooklyn and work in Queens. I'm always traveling to Queens, Manhattan and CT to visit family to so I want a network that works everywhere.

Before I shop around and choose which carrier has the best plans with reasonable prices for just one individual?
