Put me on a black jack table? Sure, I can count cards, but nowhere near what it takes to be profitable.. so I stay away. However, many people think just because they read a 20 minute article or watched the movie 21 that they can count cards and actually be profitable. I would bet that less than 1% of black jack players could make a real profit over 2 years time.

Never play a game if you're going against the house.
Well there was a father son duo of blackjack card counters who made quite the profit. But then these guys were wearing computers they had built back in the 1970s and 1980s to do the card counting.

"So how exactly does a computer help you win at blackjack? As Taft played the game, he used his toes to input the cards that were dealt. His belly computer did some quick calculations, then transmitted codes for the remaining cards through LED lights hidden in the frames of his Buddy Holly glasses."

^^^^^ This.

My ex F-I-L was a mathematician with a photographic memory capable of counting the cards in a 5-deck shoe. But he acknowledged that the best he could do knowing the remaining cards was only calculate the odds of receiving the card(s) he needed to place his bets/make his hand. It was an increase in the odds in his favor against the house, but it was a marginal increase at best. It took a lot of time at the table to come out ahead, whereas ....

He made a handsome living for many years playing gin rummy against others at the private tables the LV casinos' set up for gamblers. Many of the players had the money to burn and to them it was all about the challenge of being able to play against a possibly better player; if they lost $30-50K in an evening trying to prove who was the better player, it was all just entertainment to them. IF they won money, proving they were the better player, so much the better. The casinos would call up my FIL several times per year with a junket offer ... free round trip flights, comp'ed lodging and top quality meals, all the booze he could drink, free show passes ... whatever it took to get him to come out to be a player for a few days because they had a bunch of players lined up for a game. He rarely came home from one of these trips with less than mid-5 figures winnings ... and being the totally consumed with gambling person he was, it would take him a few months to lose it all on the bets he placed on other things where he couldn't control the outcome so well (pro & college sports bets, horse/dog track, golf games at $xxx per stroke or thousands on a single putt, etc). Generally, he could make the winnings last long enough to make it to the next LV junket ... sometimes he didn't, and he'd be calling the casinos to let them know he was ready for another game ASAP. If he hadn't had his retirement income coming in each month, he'd have been destitute and homeless on some of those down cycles when he blew through all of his gambling winnings and then some ....

My friend used to play blackjack for a living...ivy league math grad. His father still does on the side more for amusement than anything.

My friend is not know for hyperbole and here is what he told me:

1) It was a lot of work and he could do as well or better more easily working a legit job....so he quit.

2) His dad doesn't get banned per se but some casinos have coolers that can false deal if it's not out of a shoe and that sends the message.

P.S. To the OP, the main way you spot card counters is that they greatly increase their bets when the count is in their favor.

Yep. It is the betting pattern that gives them up.
That and moving their lips to count....
