Elon Musk, the founder of SpaceX recently reaffirmed that "The reason SpaceX was created was to accelerate development of rocket technology, all for the goal of establishing a self-sustaining, permanent base on Mars"

The success of SpaceX's recent reusable rocket test on April 18 is a critical achievement on the road to Mars, and the eventual goal to make humanity a multiplanet species. Musk hopes to have 80,000 people on Mars to establish a colony, but will start with around 10. It will cost around $500,000 per person to make this trip.

Getting on Mars One: now a reality show?

More than 200,000 people applied for the one-way ticket to mars via the mission Mars One - which plans to land 20 humans on Mars by 2025.
The amateur astronauts competing for a one-way ticket to Mars must demonstrate the supreme physical and psychological skills which will enable them to survive in one of the universe’s most inhospitable landscapes.

Now Endemol, the creators of Big Brother, is to turn the “world’s toughest job interview” – the selection of the first humans to establish a permanent settlement on Mars – into the ultimate reality show.

Elon is a brilliant man but I dont see it happening. I think 2060 is a more realistic date.

Why do you think that? There are now multiple people trying to send a colony into Mars.

It's just tabloid material, material that gets people to invest into the cause. I doubt this will ever occur. We haven't been back to the moon since when?

The Mars trip in my mind would be a slow death. IF you were lucky enough to actually make the trip there and survive the landing, I'm not sure how much faith I would put into them surviving the rest of their lives after that. They better do this with 10 females and 10 males, and they should most likely not be able to reproduce. Their bones will be damaged heavily from the trip alone.

You might be right to some extent.
A 286-page government report 18 months in the making could burst the bubble of aspiring space explorers with a disheartening conclusion: We’re not going to Mars.
But Elon Musk might prove many people wrong.

Even if there is no profit motive you still have to generate revenue. Certainly long term any private company involved with this could reap enormous benefits way into the future but that assumes they don't go bankrupt first. Such a short timeline seems optimistic at best. Seems like a huge risk, I wish him luck.
