There are many papers written and much research done on the fact that we are not able to multi-task and what we are really doing is switching tasks quickly which in most cases leads to lesser productivity.

Think You're Multitasking? Think Again : NPR

"As technology allows people to do more tasks at the same time, the myth that we can multitask has never been stronger. But researchers say it's still a myth — and they have the data to prove it.
Humans, they say, don't do lots of things simultaneously. Instead, we switch our attention from task to task extremely quickly."

Multitasking Damages Your Brain And Career, New Studies Suggest - Forbes

"The Stanford researchers compared groups of people based on their tendency to multitask and their belief that it helps their performance. They found that heavy multitaskers—those who multitask a lot and feel that it boosts their performance—were actually worse at multitasking than those who like to do a single thing at a time. The frequent multitaskers performed worse because they had more trouble organizing their thoughts and filtering out irrelevant information, and they were slower at switching from one task to another."

Why Humans Are Bad at Multitasking | Psychology & Human Behaviors

"Dividing attention across multiple activities is taxing on the brain, and can often come at the expense of real productivity, said Arthur Markman, a professor in the department of psychology at the University of Texas at Austin."

Point taken. There are no predictions that the population will be there by 2055 but there are those that thing we could reach that point by 2100.
