To displace the US, China would have to become the nation that produces the new inventions and corporations that are adopted by the mass market into their daily lives. From the telephone and airplane over a century ago, America has been the engine of almost all technological progress. Despite the fears of innovation going overseas, the big new technologies and influential applications continue to emerge from companies headquartered in the United States. Just in the Goog last four years, Google emerged as the next super-lucrative company (before eBay and Yahoo slightly earlier), and the American-dominated 'blogosphere' emerged as a powerful force of information and media. Even after Google, a new batch of technology companies, this time in alternative energy, have rapidly accumulated tens of billions of dollars in market value. It is this dominance across the whole process of university excellence to scientific research to creating new companies to bring technologies to market that makes the US innovation engine virtually impossible for any country to surpass.

The fact this article is so defensive is actually more concern than any wishful thinking it may have to offer.

No it explains why we are not falling behind like so many think.

ALL age groups have telephone dependency issues, from what I see. And the desire to prosper is not dead and gone.
Good for your Mrs. to notice.

The posts categorizing millenials are always laughable.

People are people, and strengths and weaknesses and foibles are unchanged throughout recorded history.
If folks take comfort in generalizations....
Every younger generation thinks they invented struggle and sex.
Every older generation thinks the young punks will be the end of the world.
Every one. Every single one.

Too many people have elected representatives with same the i've got mine, now you get yours half -assed libertarian mindset. Teabaggers are destroying this country

After Bush tanked the economy, we could have put many people back to work repairing our infrastructure, and building a new technological infrastructure. Sadly small minds destroyed great ideas.

In this study funded with an $856,000 NSF grant, three captive mountain lions were
taught to use a treadmill. It took eight months of training before the cats were “comfortable
on the treadmill.”

The study, which also monitored wild mountain lions with a special collar, determined the “power of the pounce” and the energy consumption of the cat’s hunting techniques.
While I can understand the scientific validity of such a study, nearly 1 million?

There is bunch of other ones in there including Swedish massages for rabbits.

This topic always intrigues me. People really confuse what they think is important with what is infact really important at the time. All your third world research and manufacturing did absolutely nothing for the current world economy which is being dominated top to bottom by Americans. Amazon, Google, Facebook, Apple. We have spread LTE through every part of this country and are setting up the next frontier. The world you are looking to for your supposed advancement is last century. The new century is dominated by ideas, pop culture, apps, media, and applications that ise the new hardware to advance peoples lives like Uber, etc. The US dominates this and thus we have secured our status of the richest nation for at least another 100 years. The fact that the Chinese can build highways and airports that we had 75 years ago at a rapid rate means absolutey nothing as you can tell im the current broader world. The Asians might manufacture the hardware, but they dont have the creativity to make any use of them. Thats America. No matter how many material advancements China tries to appropriate they will never have the cultural zeitgest that is America. America dominates the world with the 'cool' of its culture infused in its products. Nobody will ever think of China or Chinese cultjre the same way. So tell me then, what exactly is America falling behind in? Every industry we are in and are driving we are the best at. And thats not me saying that as an American. Go around the world, and everybody wants an Apple iPhone or a Google Android phone, or a facebook account, they want to use Uber, they want to go to Starbucks, they want Amazon to deliver their internet shopping products, they want to watch American music stars, etc etc etc

Default I don't believe this

I don't believe that this country has fallen behind any other. We just no longer lead from the front.

The other countries who supposedly are ahead of us, FOLLOW from the front.

Maybe some of the people throwing the money around should participate in collecting data on Swedish massage for various colors of mountain lions?

This crap gets thrown around allllllllllllllll the time. America is *not* falling behind in terms of R and D. There are *TOO MANY DAMN SCIENTISTS AND ENGINEERS* in the US. Period. Big companies love to drum up the false idea that the US doesn't have enough trained scientist and engineers so that they can push to bring in even more H1Bs to flood our shores and depress wages even further. I am currently enrolled in the #1 program in the world for the type of engineering I study, and even our graduates have had an insane time trying to find viable employment after they graduate because the market is simply flooded with too many graduates. Our program is loaded with Americans and not with simply with 'foreigners who know how to do the math'. There's a difference between producing sheer quantities of publications and patents and producing QUALITY publications and patents. China and India often measure their progress in terms of pure quantity alone, yet China and India have absolutely notorious reputations in academia for producing irreproducible work. Many people won't even read a science article if they see it comes from all Chinese or Indian institutions for fear of simply wasting time if you try to repeat their work because of rampant fraud. The idea that America is 'falling behind' or has a 'shortage of highly trained scientists and engineers' is a myth of epic proportions. Show me the jobs.
