Human have one distinct advantage that i believe lead to advancement as a Superior species. Unlike other animals Homo Sapiens have "two free hands" that was used very wisely. If those hands were not free knowledge would not have passed from one generation to the other.

I'm trying to even comprehend how to setup a system where there are 2 or more "equal" apex predators in the ecosystem. I think --- if I can figure it out--- it will cause a systemic instability. Maybe if one has a much faster or shorter life cycle--- but then again, that would rule *us* or *them* out, which goes against the idea of the OP.

Apex predators with a niche or universal adapted advantage will remain so until a singular event wipes them out (genetic, environmental, or otherwise)

Yea, how come Humans are the only ones that can flap their wings and fly. It just doesn't make sense we were the only ones to get to that level. And how come we can free dive and stay under water for two hours. It just doesn't make sense that we are the only species evolved enough to do that.

maybe cos all the other species said "sod that" and let us get on with it, I mean we made a good job of ruining the planet didn't we?

We don't even have to flap our wings to fly and we can deep dive way longer than two hours. We can even reach the moon! Just not without our machines.

I don't buy into cooking being responsible for our 'intelligence'. It's responsible for a lot of our ailments though. That and lack of intelligence.

I wouldn't go so far as to say all living organisms have evolved as far as we have. Many organisms are virtually unchanged from how they were way back when. Stromatolites are the oldest known life forms on earth (3.5 billion years) and are still around today. They originally produced the earth's oxygen.

Then again, dolphins are pretty smart. They even have names which they choose for themselves. If they had had fire, who knows where they would be now. Perhaps it's fire that set us off on our path of evolution. After all, without fire there would be no cooking.

You've got it right. Humans are a TERRIBLE natural design. You'd have to be forgiven from thinking we were kicked out of a spaceship and onto the planet because our bodies are so inadequately equipped for survival.

As for the OP's question... as stated earlier we aren't evolved more than other animals, we just took a different and highly unusual evolutionary path.

But we are still naturally evolved creatures of this world and survived thanks to 1 thing... we are consummate toolmakers. I think toolmaking is the main reason we are what we are... better tools meant better chances of survival and better toolmaking required more brainpower, creating a strong evolutionary pressure to get smarter while at the same time artificially negating the consequences of our other less than stellar physical traits. If you look at humanity in this light, you see the development of human toolmaking is a classic exponential curve and humans are still getting smarter in general as time goes on.

There are (and have been) many, many animals that were "1 trick ponies" with a specialized trait that allows them to do what they do. Luckily for humans, our trick is A LOT more useful and adaptable than being really fast, having a really long neck or having a big mouth full of razor sharp teeth.

And kachaa! Y'all have been anthropology ambush educated!
