I use the term "broad" from my R/C helicopter hobby. We use 2.4 GHz Direct Sequence Spread Spectrum radios so that we can all fly without stepping on each other. I suppose the term "wideband" might be more appropriate than "broadband."

You never really know how much information folks want in the answers to these questions.

Thanks everyone for the responses!

This same article states that plastics and ceramics don't absorb microwaves. I have had plastics bursting into flames very quickly, even though they held frozen food.

I don't see ants as being able to move fast enough to get out of areas of high intensity. Ants may be distributed all over the microwave, why don't some get zapped?

How close to the metal walls do the standing waves form?

A curious observation - a slice of bread in the microwave on high will toast from the inside out.
