Do you pick calls from 800 or 866 or a random unknown caller?
Lately I have been seeing a spike in useless automated calls .

Depends what my caller id says about the caller. In most cases I just ignore the call, and wait for the voice mail. Sometimes I ignore them too ...

Is not that I am obligated to answer the phone or a door bell...

No, I don't pick up calls from unknown or unidentified numbers. It only encourages them. They're often robocalls, and the robot doesn't care what you say. It will report that someone picked up, and that confirms that your number is "live".

If you have an internet based phone service you can block all the spam calls, in fact the service I use, tells you whether it is spam or not. I use Callcentric.

I never answer them & yes - they do seem to be on the rise.

Or your significant other for that matter...

Same here, if I don't recognize the number, or there is no caller ID at all, I let it go to voicemail. On the other hand, if I recognize it as a robocall that gets picked up by a human such as a survey, I will answer, say hello to trigger the human to pick up, then as soon as they answer will hang up. Just for fun. I also refuse to answer the door if the person is a stranger holding a clipboard.

If you have internet phone like Callcentric, you can block calls.

Usually unknown numbers, I wait to see if they leave a voicemail message or not.
