Congratulations! Google gift hack question (tablets, computers, apps)

I keep getting this Congratulations! Google gift thing pop up on my iPad when I go to various news articles to read.
Your only option is to press "close" which takes you to their link with questions and gift choices. You then can't get out of it. The back slash won't work. It looks like an official Google page -- but I don't trust it at all.
It totally closes down my window.
I get womor three of these fake Google pop ups a day

What do I do to stop them??!!

Does Adblock work on iPads?

I am not familiar with Adblock and will do some further research, as I'm always leery about adding those type of apps.
