So would be willing to take these as a passenger without fearing something going wrong?

I've read about the effort to make self-driving ships. The proponents claim that such vessels will be plying the oceans on regular commercial trade routes before self-driving long haul trucks start running regular routes on the interstate highways in the U.S.

My understanding is that the ships will still be crewed, but the crews will be much smaller and that the self-driving will occur mostly on the open seas, where the only dangers will be to cruising sailboats and the occasional US Navy destroyer. The human crews will handle the departures and approaches to the sea ports.

As for trusting an automated passenger ferry, we already ride in jet planes with auto-pilots and no one seems to mind.
