I want to host my own website. I like Google Sites, because it lets me have control over the HTML, of which I know a bit. I like Wix, because it lets me host gifs. I just want to host some animated Japanese characters. (Hiragana.) Not a huge load, maybe 300-400 images total when it's all done.

What website will let me do both?

Geocities used to allow this, but it doesn't exist anymore. Most self-editing website hosts nowadays are like Wix. They have pre-fabricated menus and widgets that are difficult to customize. I like Googlesites' plain interface, but I need my animated gifs, too.

I am starting to lean towards hosting my text on Googlesites, and my images linked to Googlesites but hosted on Wix.

Is there a better option?

Most web builders have a button for you to switch to "Editor" mode where you can type your own HTML. Here's the wix page on using with HTML: https://support.wix.com/en/article/adding-html-code

You could also use Wordpress if you're not comfortable coding the site from scratch.
