Automation and robotics will start advancing as fast as computers did between 1980 and today. Thirty years from now they will be ubiquitous.
That would be nice. I've been seeing prototype robots since the 1980s on science TV shows, but their development has trailed a bit behind computers, at least in terms of practicality and availability for the average consumer/private citizen.
IMO with all this rush to technology and Artificial intelligence we are unwittingly creating the means by which we render our species irrelevant.
If you've been following the rapid progress of gene-editing you've probably realized that homo sapiens are quite likely already obsolete.
In the Star Trek universe, Kahn Noonien Singh is the product of late 20th century controlled genetics; therefore we can somewhat use him as a guide as to where gene editing will eventually go. As already proven, the Chinese are unencumbered by ethics so undoubtedly they'll eventually be creating genetically modified humans if they're not doing so already. In order to remain competitive other nations like the US and UK will be forced to follow suite. Like it or not it's inevitable that our descendants will be genetic super men and women imbued with superior physical strength and enhanced mental capabilities. So that's good news, huh? No need to worry about artificial intelligences taking over because super humans will be there to keep them in check.
Robots have been around for decades. Most appliances around your home are a form of robots. The GPS satellites are a form of robots. Those Mars rovers are form of robots. They have made our jobs easier and our lives safer. They have improved productivity and brought prosperity to those who use them.
I don't see robots as a threat, but rather an extension of ourselves in the same way our children are an extension of us. If we make robots and IA, are they not our children? If you are not threatened by your children, you shouldn't be threatened by robots. One day they will look back and thank us for creating them. For all the amazing abilities they will possess, it was humans that gave them the start.
Have any of you seen the robotic sex dolls coming out of Japan right now? They look just like a normal human being, and they can do alot more than simple tricks like this 'robot' is doing.
