Well, there are specific definitions of life, else it wouldn't make sense to use that word at all if everything were alive

I respect man's definitions to a point, but they aren't absolute. They tend to set up false boundaries based on man's mind and limited understanding. Given the choice, I'm going to try to see life and existence through nature and the universe, which is infinitely wider and more advanced. Most won't get it, or ever attempt it, so none of this discussion is a surprise to me.

I doubt that, to me the universe is just a giant machine Impressive, sure, because of its size, but still dead if it weren't for living beings as defined by biology.
