I'm looking to get rid of my internet service to reduce costs, and have been looking into using data plans from my phone and using it on my computer. Does anyone have experience with this, and how does it work? I tried speaking to Cricket but have been rushed through conversations with them. I know eBay sells hotspot modems, not that I know how that works or what the costs are. It seems from looking at Cricket's website, there is a $70 30 Gig plan, not sure that will work financially for me though. At that rate, I might as well keep my internet plan.
I have a Verizon plan with unlimited data, and my phone has the hot spot function built-in to use with my laptop. Including taxes, I pay $90/month.
I don't usually watch movies from, say, Netflix, but I do watch a lot of YouTube videos, some of them pushing an hour or more. Works reasonably well, but yes, if a lot of people are using the cell tower, I have to stop trying to watch, and pick it up again later.
I can always take my laptop to the library or a cafe with internet and watch movies using their internet connection, and it's free.
No ISP required. No cable company required. No modems required. No routers required. Just a USB or Bluetooth connection between my phone and laptop. Of course, I don't need the laptop either, if I'm willing to watch a movie on my iPhone 6S. I'm not willing to do that!.
Most smart phones will have some way to connect with a TV, but exactly how to do that will depend on your TV and phone.
If you avoid iPhones because of their cost, you should know that Apple will still sell you a brand-new iPhone that is not the latest and greatest (currently, a new iPhone 8 starts at $350.) Apple will also sell you an Apple-refurbished iPhone.
And of course, Verizon will sell you an iPhone too. When you finish paying for your phone, your phone bill will go down.
