Nanotechology is already a reality!
Cars and planes that run on water. TEchnology is already in works-near term reality.
Space Elevator will be a reality in 40 years. Work in progress.
Moon colonies has got to happen.
Same for Mars-it's our new frontier.
Life extension is coming, make way.
Computers are getting smarter every year.
Definitely robots in home of wealthy.
Machine technology outstrips man; as computers get smarter we will have a hard time keeping up.
The next stage of the internet is in space. They are already working on this. Internet will be on the Moon and probably Mars.

On the other hand it can be prevented by stupid idiots blowing up the world.
If we all learn to live together, the world of tomorrow won't be that far off.

1) nanotechnology--already here in the top down form. bottom up nanotechnology still in its infancy

2) cars and planes won't run on water. they may one day run on deuterium or even hydrogen, which along with oxygen make up water, but the "run on water" phrase is misleading.

3) If we can perfect fusion, this should be feasible. It takes a lot of energy, though.

4) Way in the future, computers aren't even close yet.

5) Maybe, although we don't know what really causes aging so we don't know if it can be even be "cured"

6) Many homes already have robots. They should get better and better.

7) Not that I visit gentleman's clubs, but I think people will always prefer the real thing.

8) There may be communication between the Moon, Mars, and beyond, but the signal lag would make even the fastest connections to Mars very frustrating.

Jayrandom, I concur with most that you say but I was projecting 50-200 years in future. And I believe within 200 years most of my predictions will be close.
2) there is a scientist who is already making a car run on water (HHO)

3) Space Elevator does not require fusion. again nanotech to the rescue. Nanofibers are stronger and lighter than steel:
Nanotechnology Now - Press Release: "2008 Space Elevator Beam Power Challenge - Goals and Status"

WorldChanging: Tools, Models and Ideas for Building a Bright Green Future: Elevator Going Up!

4)go back to my previous post and look as shift happens, In about 20 years you will be able to purchase a computer as smart as a man for $1000. In 40-50 years you could purchase a computer as smart as all manking for $1000. Shift happens.

5) Aging, as you can see nanotechnology is going to be pervasive in our future. Here nanobots will run through your bloodstream, repairing all parts of your body:
Nanotechnology and Life Extension

6) I'm glad we agree on robots, nugh said.

7) I never brought up this subject. Instead if computers and robots get as smart as us and even smarter, the only way to compete is to join them, so that we become part machine and part robot or computer. As newborns we will have computer chips inserted in our brains giving us the ability to have the internet as a part of our life. We won't need to run a computer because we will be hybrids or we refuse to go this far and find that the people who are part machine get all the jobs and benefits and we get left behind. And evolution takes a leap forward, leaving us out of the equation.

8) Here if you are on the moon you can communicate with other on the net on the moon and earth. On Mars, you could communicate with others on the net who are also on Mars. You would also communicate back to earth but you will lag time.
Scientist are already planning this next stage for the net even while we sit hear on our computers and log away.
Entry To the Future Of Computers

You left out Moon Colonies (20-40 years in future)
Mars colonies (50-75 years in future) Terraforming Mars (200 years in future)

good post jayrandom, I rep you for it!!

That torch IS NOT water powered! It's electricity powered. He uses electric hydrolysis to split water in to hydrogen and oxygen and then recombines them. Water is a lower energy state than hydrogen and oxygen. You might be able to say that it is hydrogen powered, but the ultimate energy comes from electricity. From the looks of how he does it, it's probably not too efficient, either. There is a large potential barrier to overcome in separating oxygen from water and a number of catalysts are being developed to maximize the energy efficiency of this process. The same can be said for recombining hydrogen and oxygen in to water...he looks like he's just burning the stuff, which isn't particularly efficient.

Sorry! I missed Space Elevators and Moon Colonies., so #3 was my response to terraforming mars (which makes more sense).

I know they are working on space elevators but I still think it's about 50 years out, especially since people still can't really control nanotube growth.

And 7) was a joke...hope I didn't upset you! My nerdy sense of humor couldn't resist "outstripping". I guess I've watched too much Futurama.

Interesting thread. It's nice see some are hopeful about the future rather than fearful of it.

Thanks jayrandom, that is what my gy2020 is all about. That is not lost eyesight but rather a hopeful sign that I'll be around by 2020. I'm 65 now and who knows what lies ahead? As I said earlier, I'm looking 50-200 years ahead. I see the the space elevator in 50 years also, but maybe 10 years sooner. I probably won't be around to see it though, darn. I use to be a big fan of the flying car but Moller has been working on his car a long time and I just don't see it anytime soon. That may also be 50 years out. I think the futuristic computers, robots will be here sooner.

watching a special on fusion power, which seems awesome, if we can get it to be efficient and cost effective.

question - they get the temps up to near 300 million degrees. how much heat can a magnetic field contain before collapsing?
