Here's a good article about 6 different technologies that advanced in 2008 from Popular Mechanics Magazine.

In other words, 2008 was one of the most boring unproductive years in the history of technology. Facebook subscribes can update their profile on their phone, without going home to their keyboard. Wow. You can rent movies by snail mail. Whoopee.

This is actually somewhat of a big deal. The "wow" is in the interactivity between people and large systems through the use of portable devices going mainstream. I was listening to MP3s on my cellphone five years before Apple did it, but they brought it to the masses, and they deserve a lot of credit for doing so. These things are important, because they lay the foundation for truly "killer apps" to be written. Advances in technology usually happen in baby steps, not giant leaps. This type of capability is quite significant. You'll see just how significant in a couple of years, after the digital TV switchover takes place next month and those frequencies are freed up for mobile devices and wireless services to start using it. Watch for Google to do big things during this time.

Re-read the article. The significant service here has nothing to do with the post office or DVD discs.
