It REALLY makes sense that he would do this. After all, didn't he sell buggy software? Back when he was writing his version of BASIC, he probably got frustrated with a blue screen and said "Not only poor people should experience this."
The more I think about this, the more I realize how outrageous it is. While he may have been trying to make a point, he was being a jerk. Long, long ago, I was in a class where a girl in front of me was being a twit. At some point, I decided to repeatedly poke her with a pen when she was being a twit. I was called into the Principal's office and given a blessing out that I have never forgotten. The essence was "You may find people to be not what you want them to be, but you NEVER aggress against them for that." I was in fifth grade when I learned that lesson. Bill Gates hasn't learned it yet.

You're lucky. A friend of mine had a jerk (no, I'm not calling you a jerk) behind him in Geometry class. Guy kept grabbing the short hair on the back of his neck and yanking. He would immediately set both hands on his desk and act innocent. My friend kept telling him to stop, but, of course he wouldn't.
He did it one too many times. My friend, knowing the jerks hands were going to flat on his desk, turned around and drove the point of a compass clear through his hand and into the desk.
