They're suppose to use some kind of ultra high frequency signal that deters pests and sends them running. The unit I tried was a stand-alone device.

Supposedly, the frequencies are only detectable by the pests. On the unit I had, one setting was for bugs like ants, spiders, wasps, mosquitoes, etc. Flip the switch to another setting to ward off critters like mice, etc. The recommendation is that you should aim the unit in the direction or path where the pests enter or congregate. Needless to say, it didn't discourage any of the pests in the least. They continued going about their business as usual.

Such gadgets sound like a great idea. Just plug it in, turn it on, and your pest problems are over. There are some that claim to turn your entire house electrical system into a giant pest deterrant. Some people swear by these gimmicks, but from in my own experience, they're a waste of time and money. To me, they rank in the same category as tablets that can turn tap water into gasoline.

I bought one from Black and Decker. I have only seen spiders in the house so it doesn't work on them. I have not seen other insects so I think it is more likely due to Terminix than the Sonic device.
