I'll have to check into the John Carter series. I don't remember seeing it, though. Odd.

also used to love reading the analog and other scifi anthologies of the 50s/60s/70s

Some of David Brin is excellent, The Practice effect, The Postman- His Short story the Crystal Spheres is outstanding- Another great is a short story called Contact, where human meet Aliens for the first time out by a nebula, can't remember author. Hogan as mentioned before. Mostof the sci fi I read is before the 90's :
I agree that Cantel for Lebowitz is one of the best post Holacastic novels writen

Almost anything by Clarke or Asimov I can read over and over.
I really like the first Rama and most of the Foundation series.

The Foundation by Asimov is the best for me. I read it I don't know how many times, in Italian as a young kid and in the original English version later.
I also like Robert Sheckley, although I don't find much of him in bookstores; it looks like he was more famous in Italy than in the USA.
