Default Just pre-recycled an old computer monitor of mine that didn't work anymore...

...and I was wondering if there would be anything in the resulting main board that would prevent me from making keychains out of the components, like acids and stuff like that. There're like a ton of transistors in here. Do they contain any hazardous materials?

Oh, don't worry, the rest of it is in the garbage in the garage outside, and I've handled the CRT CAREFULLY. I knew of the dangers of the CRT.

You can't properly recycle a monitor yourself. And you should never throw it in the garbage!!

There are many hazardous materials contained on a circuit board... lead, mercury, cadmium and many others.

I didn't know what to do with it either, so for like half a month it was down here taking up tons of space. Finally I asked my father what to do with it, and he told me to just take it to the garbage, and if they take it, fine, but if they don't we'll find something else. That I did, but took matters into my own hands beforehand.

There are small amounts of some metals that are "known to cause cancer in California" and maybe some toxic oils in the capacitors if the thing was REALLY old. You still would not want to saw or sand the boards and release a bunch of dust. Personally, I wouldn't slice it to make keychains, and if I did I would encapsulate them in one of the casting resins. The stuff is basically no different than what is in a cellphone or iPod, it is just that those have an encapsulation around them as well. There are much cooler things to turn into keychains and fobs.

Most of the lead is in the CRT itself, think the average tube has 4 pounds of lead. Circuit cards are not necessarily that toxic, especially if components are not destroyed.

But the landfill is the last place they belong. Your community should offer a recycling service, probably your best option now that you have pre-recycled it.
