One reason is that if you try to collect on homeowners, you would likely have to have a rider on the policy, since lightning damage isn't usually covered (act of God, ya'know), and if you WERE able to collect, your rates would go up from that point forward. Y'all do what you want. Disagree if you want. I've got a Tripplite. (Triplet was an old analog voltohm meter)

One other thing a lot of folks don't understand is that power fluctuations that don't kill electronics can still damage them and shorten their lifespan. Put good power into a $2500 set and it might easily last 10% longer. Over the life of the electronics, the device will pay for itself.

One of my standard questions is, "How long have you had that surge protector/UPS?" If the answer is 2 years or longer I recommend replacing it. They do wear out.

"Just let my insurance cover it" is an easy out, and a lot of people do just that. But I agree with Harry; In the long run you will pay far more than it would cost to either protect your equipment with quality products or just do the whole house.

We are in the process of buying a house. Actually, closing is Sept 2. I'm interested in the idea of protection for the whole house. I may not get this done immediately, but I'll get an electrician to wire the protection where it all comes in. I assume that it would be before it gets to the breaker box. I'll get whatever the best protection is, and replace periodically.
