Scientists are only months away from creating artificial life, it was claimed yesterday.

Dr Craig Venter – one of the world’s most famous and controversial biologists – said his U.S. researchers have overcome one of the last big hurdles to making a synthetic organism.

Absolutely fascinating, thanks for posting! However, if I read the article correctly pre-existing DNA will be placed into cells to make a new species of single cell organisms...while this is a pretty big step for biological sciences it isn't quite the creation of life breakthrough that the title of the article led us to believe.

What he is basically suggesting is taking a Monsanto-like Marxist Biological approach and manipulating already existing living organisms , crossing species barriers by specifically inserting a particular gene or genes they can identify as having specific properties and inserting them into the DNA of an entirely different organism and creating a Franken-organism to accomplish whatever specific purpose they see fit. In this case, CO2 & Toxic Waste eating organisms. The title is indeed misleading, but it's purpose no doubt is to attract interest in his research in the first place. But as far as creating any kind of life from nothing is not the real subject of this reasearch.

Unfortunately, the whole concept does'nt address the real needs for correcting the problems which are prevelant in our environment. That being that every individual human being on Earth needs to change their habits. The need to stop polluting, stop being wasteful, recycling, etc, etc, etc. This obviously won't happen since we all know human nature and the general resentment in our modern society of anyone being told by anybody to change lifestyle.

When you look at the way modern medicine/pharmapseudical industries approach anything, they only take a treat the symptoms appraoch rather than addressing the cause. Various groups protesting and demanding governments find a cure for AIDS, but no one ever suggesting correcting any behavour which is the real cause of it's spread. Same with alcohol abuse and smoking. Everyone wants a cure, but no one wants to face or address the fact that people should change lifestyles. It's simply something that is considered unthinkable and meets with vicious and bitter opposition.

Monsanto's interest in this GMO approach is short term huge profits and of course U.S. politicians (who they helped place in office in the first place) who support them are motivated by keeping the world power dominance status quo over the planet through controlling the food industry. So far there are numerous reports on the catastrophic side effects of GMO Crop pollen and it's harm to other organisms in our environment. This is the major question that should be asked about the creation of genetically engineered organisms that will be powerful enough to destroy toxic waste, what else would they be capable of doing when released or if escaping into the earth's environment ??? Monsanto is on historical record for keeping certain and specific facts and research from ever seeing the light of day. Only court cases and court orders have released their findings showing they have always known all along the dangers of their products and have withheld this from the public. It also shows that in the interest of obscene profiteering they have not done enough research on the consequences of their work for possible deadly irreversible environmental damage.

So much careful reviewing and question asking should be the order of the day here as well. Whether this happens in our desparate world or not remains to be seen.
