Hi folks!

Just moved here from Florida. The economy is dead there. Husband sent a search for a job and the first respondant was here in Bremerton. It is absolutely gorgeous now but people keep talking about cold dreary days with rain in winter. I must admit it makes me worried. I was diagnosed with Seasonal Effective Disorder in New York.

So I was wondering if anyone else that has this issue out there? If you do , what coping mechanisms do you have in place that work well? I would love to find more natural means of dealing with this if possible.

It helps if you can get outside for a walk every day. On rainy days you can watch the king5.com doppler to see when a break is coming.

From SADers I know:
Make sure to get exercise every day, no matter how much you want to stay inside, take extra Vitamin D, and invest in a light box and spend 15 -20 minutes per day in front of the light box.

I bought a goLite at Costco the first year I was here. I haven't used it since but it did seem to help. As Ira said, exercise is key as is VitD. Not a big fan of tanning booths but you will find that plenty of people here use them. Also, if you can find groups that you are interested in joining or new activities, that will help too. Because moving in general is hard and depression (not just SAD related) can be exacerabated by being lonely. Good luck!

I think you can take vitamin D supplementation as well. Have heard great things about combining it w/fish oil too...

In addition to Costco, Amazon is another place to look for the Philips GoLite Blu. We've never tried one, but we certainly thought about it our first winter here. I've seen them on eBay, also.

From somewho had SAD:

Get the GoLite! Leave it on more then 30 minutes
Get a vitamin D supplement, I liked the liquid Super D. You can mix it into our food
Don't stay indoors, join clubs
And look into 5HTP - it's a bio hormone that works as an anti-depressant, it's what finally got my SAD under control

Remember that you are less likely to get skin cancer than in Florida. You will look younger than you are as you age by having less sun exposure too.

Seattle is an especially tough place for SAD sufferers (I am one, and in a very similar climate). It's not the short days of winter that get to you. It's that it's overcast most of the time.

I lived in central Oregon a few years, and it was as if I didn't have SAD at all. Here in Corvallis I am affected a lot. I just came back recently for work.

I haven't said anything of help yet, I know. I am myself making note of the suggestions others have given here.
