Hey all. Looks like I might be headed to Seattle in time for the Fall Semester, so long as I can successfully and quickly find part-time work. I used to be a barista with Starbucks for about a year and a half and then I joined the military, where I just completed my 4 years of active duty. Preferably, I'd enjoy working with Starbucks again while I'm a student, but really I'm just desperate for anything...

In you Seattleites' experience, is it relatively easy to find a decent part-time job? I'm having NO luck here in the Chattanooga area of Tennesse...

Also this might be a dumb question but I have a Tennessee driver's license. That doesn't matter when getting a part time job in Washington, does it?

Why don't you get in touch with Starbucks again? That would make the most sense to me.

Yeah that's great I'm asking about the job market in general for the area.

I think you'll be more likely to find something part-time in Seattle than Chattanooga.

Try to work at the starbucks on the 40th floor of the Columbia building. Best views!

From what I hear, in general, the job market is not great - even for retail and other service jobs. If you take a look on craigslist, though, you will see a few barista positions popping up, but not much of anything else...just the sheer number of coffee shops in Seattle will probably help, if that's what you're looking for. Also, if you left Starbucks in good standing, you would have a leg up there.

However, I've heard that the end of the summer is a bad time to look for service jobs in Seattle. Plan to have some kind of financial cushion when you arrive, rather than relying on your ability to find a job quickly.

Why would a Tennessee drivers license make a difference? As far as I know, you just need a social security number to prove that you are legal to work in the US. Is this different in some states?

It's not like there's any shortage of starbucks in the area to choose from...

I've seen numerous job listings that require a valid WA state driver's license, though I imagine it's related to the responsibilities of the job. Driving a service truck or making on-site calls / deliveries could require the use of a corporate vehicle, and the insurance policy might only cover in-state drivers. Just my thoughts on it.. I could be completely wrong.
