I am in my mid 30s and all of my friends are in their early 20s to late 50s+. They live in downtown, Belltown, Capital Hill, First Hill, Queen Anne, Fremont, Ballard, Edmonds, Federal Way, Redmond, Bellevue.....pretty equally divided on drivers, bussers, walkers and bikers...I just don't know anybody who uses an umbrella.

I don't know what it is about here in Seattle, too, but it seems like it would just get in the way and a hassle to hang on to.

I did use umbrellas all of the time when I lived in DC/Northern VA. It's just different here.

Gad! Me too!
I always wonder why the bumbershooted ones want to gather under the awnings, holding their weapons at eye-height.

My husband bought some really expensive water repellent jacket with a hood from REI. He'd wear it to walk to and from the bus every day.

My shoes would be absolutely ruined if I did that.

The trick is to buy a really expensive jacket with a hood, and really cheap shoes

A good Gore-Tex jacket and some shoes that can take the rain are a requirement in Seattle, much like a snow blower is a requirement in the upper Midwest.

If you want to use an umbrella, use an umbrella. I don't think you'll be a social outcast if you decide to use an umbrella every now and then.

Another vote for good shoes and a good jacket. Every time it's rained hard enough to warrant an umbrella here (maybe 5 or 6 times in the last 2.5 years?), I'm already out and about and don't have it with me, anyway. Some women carry fancy work-shoes in a bag with them, and where boots to walk to work. And Seattle sexy hair: hood removed, you see the fringe where a few droplets managed to get onto her head, just a little halo of fresh drops. An umbrella would totally ruin that.
