I agree eskercurve, I would liken Seattle most to San Francisco. The difference is the volume level. I don't think gay marriage would have any trouble passing locally, but I can't picture parades, simply because people would say "Sure, get married but why make a big noise out of it?"

We don't honk car horns either. And if you come to a four way stop, everyone can be so polite waiting for the other guy to go that no one goes.

LMAO. Bush couldn't have been any more simple if he used crayons.

"They hate us for our freedom!"

Monosyllabic mumblings for the nitwit crowd.

The OP needs to check out Atlanta or Orlando for ladies; the pickings are much better than Seattle.

(I am going to avoid standard terms and instead pick categories that mean the same in any city)

A. Libertarian
B. Conservative
C. Moderate (Obama a little too liberal but better than Republicans any day)
D. Liberal (Loves Obama, he's just right << That's me! )
E. Very Liberal (Likes Obama but Respectfully\Intelligently to the left of him)
F. Crazy Liberal (Thinks Obama is a Republican & will say stuff like "He's just like Bush.")

On a side note, if anyone wants to make a comparison with or suggest another city I'd be interested to hear a response too (such as San Diego, L.A., SF or Portland). As far as liberals, I want to avoid Fs and find more Ds from my political scale I made up above.
Well, I've lived in all of those cities. I would classify them as:

Seattle: B-E in the city itself, B-A on the Eastside where all the growth is happening.

San Diego: D-C. The religious angle is skewed by all the Mexicans though, who make the area overwhelmingly religious.

LA: B-D. B-C in the suburbs

SF: A-E

Portland: B-FFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFF (seriously, 1 F wasn't enough)

As an aside: Why is it you feel the need to be defined by your religious and political views? I honestly couldn't tell you the religious affiliations of most of my friends, and only know of most of their political views as a result of divining them from random comments I pick up on in casual conversation. I can't imagine that most atheists (myself included) have any interest in attending an "atheist meeting". We need to gather in order to re-affirm our belief of non-belief?

Xanathos, do you think the Eastside is to the right of moderate? Do you think Maria Cantwell will have any difficulty getting reelected? I live on the Eastside and I would not put the majority to the right of moderate at all, unless you're talking all the way to Carnation and Fall City maybe. I would put the Eastside at a C-D blend with some some conservatives in older areas like Newport Hills.

I don't consider libertarians to be the right of moderate. They're smack dab dead-center most of the time, which is why they don't fit in any little boxes. It's economically conservative but socially liberal out here.

Seattle is one of the most intelligent cities in the country, so you will see a higher percentage of Atheists. You'll also tend to see a more reasoned political spectrum. Meaning more principled Libertarians, and a lot more Progressives, with not a lot of Centrists.

Wow. I'm not even religious and I find that statement offensive.

You would be correct in stating that the percentage of atheists is higher amongst the well educated (some would argue over educated). However, even amongst the well educated, atheists are still a sound minority. BTW, when I say atheist, I mean a true atheist. There are a lot of people who are not religious per se, but do believe in a deity of some sort. In fact, the PNW has a large population of "new age" spirituality believers.

Notice that I use the term "educated" and not "intelligent". Those two words are often used interchangeably. I view them as entirely different. You can take someone of ordinary intelligence and make them well educated, but you really can't make someone substantially more intelligent than they already are. It is misleading to say that Seattle is one of the most intelligent cities in the country. It is one of the most educated cities. Unless of course they subjected the residents to mandatory IQ tests.

Over one in five (22%) do not believe in a God in the United States. I wouldn't necessarily call nearly a quarter a "sound minority" and the percentage in Seattle is almost certainly higher than the national average.

Usually, people more or less equate intelligence and education.

I think your number counts those people who believe in "a God", just do not subscribe to a mainstream religion. Those people are not true atheists. A true atheist is someone who thinks you die and that's it. A true atheist is someone who believes science explains our existence in its entirety. There are a lot of polls and studies out there on this. Heck, we could probably go back and forth all night quoting a different source. The numbers I go by indicate that 92% of Americans believe in a God or higher force. That means only 8% are true atheists. I assume that those numbers are higher in Seattle. That said, I think even your numbers indicate a sound minority. It's a subjective call. Some of the threads and posts on this forum might lead one to believe atheists are the majority in Seattle. They aren't even close. I think this is because the vast number of new age spirituality believers in the PNW get lumped into the atheist count; something that is incorrect.

I agree that "usually", people more or less equate intelligence and education. That doesn't make it so though. If you took someone with a below average IQ and put that person through college until he got a ph.d, is that person now in the upper crust of intelligence? I've known some highly intelligent high school dropouts and some dumb as a box of rocks people with degrees. I doubt I'm alone. I've also known dumb high school dropouts and highly intelligent people with degrees. My point is simple. Education != intelligence.
