Hello. I'm moving to Seattle (from Pittsburgh) and would like to rent a place that has an extra garage or room for my table saw and woodworking equipment. However, my day job will be in downtown Seattle, so my goal is to balance commute time with need for some space.

Don't mind living with roommates etc and a budget of ~$1200/month. Is there some outlying region around Seattle that you would recommend?

I would recommend checking out east Issaquah or Snoqualmie. They probably have houses that can rent for that much or cheaper with space for woodworking. Then there's a park and ride going direct to downtown from the Issaquah park and ride, so you can drive your car there then take the bus, or just continue on to downtown. Typically 20-30 minutes. 1 hr on bad traffic days (i.e. when there's snow, ice, a slight breeze, chance of more than just drizzle for rain, etc, or when people actually decide to drive into work ... I recommend the bus, at least you can read or catch a Z to work).

From what I'm reading, Magnolia might fit these criteria as well. Agreed?

Unfortunately Magnolia rentals will be significantly higher than your budget. The lots are also small so most homes would not have a double garage for the workshop space. ''Shoreline'' "Lake Forest Park" and "Mountlake Terrace" would be options as they are fairly priced and are more arborial than some of the other Seattle neighborhoods.

Just wanted to say good luck to you! We moved to Seattle 4 years ago from Pittsburgh...we are now back in Pittsburgh. I think I get what you are looking for and my suggestion would be Issaquah and beyond on 90 east.

I don't agree that Magnolia would fit... it's not even country living.

I agree with looking along i90 east. I think it be good to check out South of Seattle to the Tacoma area as well... I'm not sure how much space you'd need, but budget wise you'd definitely find something. North could work (Everett/Snohomish area). Tacoma and Everett have commuter trains (heavy rail) and buses going to Seattle DT.

I worked for a guy who had his shop in a double-garage in Mountlake Terrace. Pretty good setup.
