Fremont has the roots and skeleton of an alternative neighborhood, but it's frat/sorority central these days. I would cross it off your list. All the other recommendations are spot on.

ronaldo, it sounds like you had a bad experience in Fremont recently. Axe to grind? You've posted "Fremont is frat boy land" on the weekends about a half dozen times from what I've seen.

I wouldn't consider Fremont "frat boy land" in the least. You may have had one night out on the town in Fremont and had a run in with a bunch of frat kids, but that doesn't make it "frat boy land."

Anyway ...

I do agree with the other recommendations.

I would add Georgetown and the south end of Lake Washington as having hip neighborhoods. I've been exploring the south end more as my job is having me go down there more often recently. Those two areas are really cool.

I know Fremont very well, it definitely has some strong artsy roots, some funky artifacts, cool looking apartment buildings, etc.

The nightlife is now completely geared towards frat/sorority types and the neighborhood demographic reflects that. Walking around Fremont on a Friday night (Ive done so many times, I used to play with a band who had shows at Tost and Nectar occasionally) you will see kens and barbies everywhere. Its very different from Capitol Hill or Ballard where you get a little bit of everything. In Fremont it's 90% frat/sorority types on weekends especially, but really every night.

I always take visitors there because the neighborhood itself (nevermind the bars and the people) is a fun, small, quirky area with cool statues and landmarks, but very few "alternative" people choose to live or hang out there these days. Id say its actually one of the most mainstream (along with Belltown) neighborhoods in the city, in terms of the people.

The nightlife on Capital hill is amazing from Electronics venues (although, sadly no longer the War Room), Hip-Hop and Rock. They also have a lot of alternative clothing stores. There are some totally awesome veg-only restaurants too (Like the Sage Cafe yum) !

Bellingham?!? I thought the OP wanted Seattle, and a "hip" part of it, to boot.
