Default Where to live...where to live...

So I know this is not exactly a new question for this forum...but where should I live?

My husband and I are moving from Florida this summer.

We have 2 non-aggressive breed dogs.

We *hope* one of us has a job, but we should have enough money to live on for up to a year if not.

I am open to just about any area of town at this point, but I'm really interested in the areas that have the best traffic for commuting downtown. One or both of us are likely to end up downtown for work.

As far as budget goes, if we are both employed full-time in our careers, we should be able to afford a $2k or more in rent (but less is always better ) for 2-3 beds.

So, locals, what do you think? Oh, and if there is good/convenient bus service that would be a plus as well (I would prefer to commute via bus if I work downtown, just because I hate dealing with traffic...but I'm not against driving if it works out better).

I'd consider West Seattle. it's more affordable than the trendier parts of the city, has easier downtown access than the north parts of town (or points north and south, even eastside), good bus service (I commuted by bus for years) and has a lot of the funky unique shops that the rest of the neighborhoods have.

Good luck.

We did like West Seattle when we were last out that way (esp. Lincoln Park...Seattle has the best parks!), but if one of us ended up working on the east or northern side of the city, would it be the commute from hell?

Not so bad. I got to Redmond in 45 minutes most days; you are going the "reverse commute" to the east side. Same going north, you are going away from the incoming flow of traffic. If you're around Lincoln Park, maybe add 5-10 minutes to the estimates. If you are closer to California Ave, it's less.
