I am taking a job in Seattle in June and wanted some suggestions on where to rent. I will be working downtown, but would like to live somewhere away from the city. My boyfriend and I have three dogs (so we are looking to rent a house with a yard) and spend a lot of time hiking and biking, so close to green spaces would be nice. We currently live in a mountain town and my commute to work is about an hour, I would like a shorter commute into Seattle, and am open to taking transit. Also, it would be nice to be on the east side because we plan to spend a lot of time at Snoqualmie in the winter. Any suggestions would be much appreciated.

Agreed, but Issaquah/Sammamish will cut that commute in half. I90 is definitely the better way to get to Seattle.

Redmond is fine, same with Kirkland, but the commute would be on 520 which has a lot more traffic plus a new toll starting next month. The alternative is driving down 405 to I90 and that's about the worst traffic in the area after 6:30 am and lasts pretty much all day.

Thoughts on Renton? Kennydale? I think Issaquah would be great, but the rentals seem to be all townhouses and we would really like something with a yard...

Kennydale is very nice, but some of it can be noisy since it's close to I-405.
Renton is varied and physically quite large. Some of the western part of the Renton Highlands is kinda scuzzy and run down, and part of the eastern Renton Highlands has lots of new homes with small yards...Parts of downtown Renton near I-405 aren't very nice, and a lot of the homes near downtown Renton are smaller and plain, but there are pockets that are awesome. Some of the 98178 zip code between Skyway and Renton have big lots and lake or mountain views, and some of the parts of Renton nearest Maple Valley, Kent, and Issaquah are pretty rural.

It is further out but it sounds like North Bend could be a possibility. It will be closer to the mountains and you can still get to Seattle by bus or a car bus combo depending on how much you want to drive. It would be 1 hour by bus via Sound Transit from the North Bend P&R to downtown. In North Bend you will have larger yards as well. It would take you 15-20 minutes to get to Snoqualmie Pass from there. So it is a choice of longer commute to "play" or longer commute to work....

I lived in North Bend for about a year and a half. I worked downtown and the commute was typically 45 minutes or less. My wife worked at the Airport and was about the same commute time. It's hard to beat the seclusion of North Bend.. My one word for North Bend would be amazing!

Was that driving or taking the bus? I am ok with driving, but would prefer not to pay too much for parking. If there is a park and ride en route, that would be useful.

There are several park and rides en route in order westbound: Issaquah Highlands PnR, Issaquah PnR, Eastgate Pnr, Bellevue Way PnR. All very convenient to i90. They have express bus where you can get to DT from Issaquah in 23 mins.

ETA: There's also a PnR in Fall City/Preston... but Issaquah and Bellevue would have more frequent service. There is a bus from North Bend to Seattle, but the schedule is limited.
