Black Diamond is still a great place. The bakery, over 100 years old, is still going strong. They were supposed to build a bunch of tract homes a few years ago, but thank the lord for the economic downturn, it never got built.

I would ignore most of the valley's cities like Auburn and Kent. Go further south. Check out Sumner, Buckley, maybe Enumclaw. They are all reasonably close to Seattle, and closer to Tacoma. Sumner seems like a good location and close to both places. Little more rural feeling, but only five minutes from Puyallup and they have a big train and transit center with many daily stops.

If you want further our there, look at Bonney Lake. It's a nice area and growing.

In general, Kent and Auburn can be iffy. They are not exactly desirable.

Hmm... its not really fair to discount the entire city. Kent and Auburn do have parts. Generally, the highlands areas of both cities are the nicer parts. It just would require more research to make sure you've nailed down the right side of town. Kent and Auburn are also served by the "big train" (The Sounder train is a commuter train) and big transit centers. Kent Station also has a mall attached to it as well.
