I moved down to Seattle from Bellingham, Washington so my girlfriend, who travels for a living, could be closer to an International airport. Not having work lined-up myself, I had to jump into the trades and do whatever I could to earn money, and soon discovered what total self-serving idiots King County has residing here. I was ripped off by the first guy who never reported the Federal taxes he took out of each paycheck, making my wages well below minimum (when you account for traveling expenses to get to various job sites), then was constantly having my successful efforts ridiculed by a white trash know nothing blowhard who I spent more time cleaning-up after than anything, and the last guy thought he owned me and kept me indebted to him until I finally told him to **** off before I reported him to L&I for not having a business license. Seattle people by and large are nice people, but the tradespeople in this town are entitled jerks.

I have been to Seattle many times, and I get a strong vibe of liberal intellectual elitism. Being smart is a good thing of course, but I don't like it when people think they are smarter and more sophisticated than others and rub it in your face every chance they get. If they feel you are beneath them, you are ignored. Nope, I can't stand those types and it seems like Seattle is full of them.

That said, I LOVE everything else about that whole area. It is truly the most beautiful part of the U.S.

I'm about to move from NC with about $6k saved up, but having saved up for 4 years, I know you're in way better shape than me. But if I can't get my company to transfer me soon, I'm outta here and I'm just going to hope for the best! I'm pretty damn scared though of course.
Quitting a job and moving anywhere nowadays with only $6k in savings isn't just scary. It is absolutely insane.

It's not really that insane, if you have skills in high demand in Seattle and have a reasonable expectation of getting a job within a month or so.

This is the sad truth about most so-called progressive liberal cities.. THey are a bunch of know it alls who have learned everything from their college professors and liberal media outlets. However, after they meet a guy who has actually experienced some of the many things they claim to be intellectual experts about, they feel utterly humiliated. For example, I love it when they give me lessons about African culture and mindset when in fact they don't know crap about African people, their culture or the situation there. When I explain to them I have been there, learned the languages, spent time with the people and took the time to actually learn and be apart of the culture they will get very pissy at me since I have proven to be smarter than them about something considered "liberal, hip, progressive". Rather than being intrigued and inspired by what I learned they feel intimidated and as if I am threatening their intellectual fortitude.

It is tiring being around so many know-it-alls and brilliant thinkers who are really hard-headed, close-minded, shallow and as perspicaciously deficient as many of the people they may ridicule or denigrate.

Now, I am not saying Seattle people or all liberal progressives fit this criteria, but there are a good number of them that do.

Yet didn't Seattle used to be a largely blue-collar city just a generation ago? Lots of dock workers and rail workers and fisherman.

And isn't Seattle still full of blue-collar workers? They must still be there. They just don't seem to have the political impact, or get as much attention, as do hipsters and tech workers.

Stastcisnerd:
Given the welfare state Seattle has become, a lot of people having been coming here with a lot less than 6K. It practically pays better to be on welfare than it does to work here.

Yakkatak:
I'm in business for myself here, and have to deal with people just like that all the time.

Today I tried to imagine what it would be like if I were back in L.A. Unbearable heat, smog, traffic, baristactors. Then I came up over a hill and saw the glistening Sound stretched out, trees for days, noted it was 66 and sunny, and I counted my blessings. A few people even waved. No place is perfect, but a place can be perfect for you. If this place isn't your place, you should run. Run away. Fast. Life is a finite little joke. Don't be the punchline.

If me could sent back all the liberals that still believe that government holds the answer to every problem and that if we only had more government programs we would somehow live in a Utopian world full of salvation and bliss.

Also the liberals that don't believe in hope and only celebrate doom, failure and lack of personal responsibility need to go back where they came from and Seattle will be all right.

We need a common sense party to go full Ray Rice on Kshama Sawant and the Socialist Party .

What kind of person thinks this is a good thing? the right to free abortion on demand at any stage of pregnancy, without interference or coercion. Clinics providing abortion services must have the full protection of the law.

I am pro choice BTW but having an abortion at 8 months because she does not want it anymore and her head hurts. I just feel that is wrong on so many levels I could see if it was matter of live or death for the mother than OK in but if both are 100% good heath nope not going to fly. .

We call for children's allowances that will help ensure that every child's basic rights and needs are satisfied in a stimulating, empowering, and caring environment.

We call for the lowering of the voting age to 15

We need to kick the Socialist Party out of Washington State .

Go look at what they want to do :

Platform - Socialist Party USA

LOL. Yes to this.

My husband's from CT, while I'm from the LA Area so when we went to the Symphony a few years ago (Handel's Messiah) we dressed to the 9s because well....you're going to the bleeping symphony! Is there anything more formal?

We were both horrified at the way most of the other's were dressed. It was....abominable! We then had a lengthy discussion on how this NEVER would have happened in say....NYC, Boston, or LA
