We moved from Florida. We expected a higher cost of living and knew for sure that some things (esp. RENT) would be higher. However, we were actually a bit shocked by just how much more expensive basic groceries were.

We drive econo cars so the higher gas prices don't bother us much, but we were not prepared for the much higher prices on basic things like rice, eggs, etc.

Can you guys share average cost for things around there? I just want to get an ideal of what things cost things like milk, bread you know staples...

I think I might be in sticker shock there
Why wouldn't you live closer. Driving long distances is for idiots. You spend a huge chunk of your life in a car if you commute.

The price of gas should always be high as it should include the cost of roads and infrastructure.

Outside of housing, the prices are pretty much the same for most things.

The price of groceries here is pretty silly but it all has to get shipped up from California and other parts of the country. On top of the price all the fresh produce is usually about a week older than the stuff you find down south.

lets see i have an 2011 x5 and a gl350 bluetech and there getting 55 mpg on the freeway wich is better than a gas powered car my neighbor has a 2011 jetta we took it out on the freeway and that thing is doing 64 mpg so you figure out the difference. diesel burns more effencient than regular gas and diesel is not dry like regular gas it's wet so it helps lube the pistons and you can drive a diesel forever verses a gas powered car. and with living in calf under the diesel abatement laws you don't have to smog em every year just every 6 years. and the new diesels burn alot cleaner than the hybrids after the eletric motor shuts off. and in my job i only pay .99 cents per gallon for diesel verses the4.09 you would pay

I'm curious what produce you're eating, since all the berries and apples are sourced from up here, as is most of the veg.

Really? I would like to see Washington grown bell peppers, onions, lettuce, tomatoes, avocados, cucumber, bananas, oranges, nuts, asparagus between november and june. All fresh produce up here is expensive up here because it either has to be shipped 1000 miles or grown in a green house locally which is even more expensive.

I think that would apply to most of the United States.

Current tax here on a gallon is 37.5 cents, so the real price of the gas is not bad at $3.20-$3.30.

We get local (Yakima) produce all summer at the farmer's markets, bu the rest of the year it's coming from Mexico and South America.

Ok, but you did the research first to determine that he's essentially taking a 20% pay cut by moving from KC to Seattle. You're right, that is better than getting laid off. Times are rough for everyone.

Um, isn't is kinda weird to presume that you know the circumstances of why someone is moving in the first place? Were moving to Seattle because my husband's job is moving to Seattle not really because we just want to say oh yeah lets move to Seattle. It is like this job=Seattle no job=don't move to Seattle. I think I will take the former even if it means we have to make changes for the year we will be there.

Yeah actually we have been looking at housing prices, groceries etc for the last few months. And hopefully he will actually get a cost of living increase because of what we have found. Even with that though I would rather have a 20% cut than a 100% cut .
