Yeah, I have to admit THAT day was a SCORCHER - a bit too hot even for ME. I was actually stuck on the freeway that day in an overheating car and I had to put the HEATER ON to cool it off - not only that, but the power windows went out and all but ONE were stuck in the closed position. Man was I HOT!

Interestingly enough that official high of 103 is HOTTER than it's been at any time on my land down in SE Arizona over the last 5 years. If someone had told we'd ever get to 103 in Seattle I'd have laughed in their face - and yet, it happened.

Still, in spite of some superhot days, I LOVED that summer.

Ken

100+ degrees is bearable if I don't have to be on a rooftop fixing someone ELSE's cooling equipment. And if it only happens once or twice a summer.

When you're fixing an AC system on days like that, sometimes even the fan blowing hot air off the condenser unit can help you cool off a bit.

Here's something I wrote from my own experience:

It's a pretty hot day, right around 100 degrees, but there are three of us on the job, so it shouldn't be too tough. We're installing a new furnace in a home. This furnace is also part of the air conditioning system, circulating cool air on hot days, so we need to get this working ASAP.

When I get to the job site I see a fellow tech and I ask what exactly the job is. "We're putting this up in the attic". Okay, shouldn't be too hard. We go upstairs and set up a step ladder to get into the attic. We get the furnace out of the truck, carry it upstairs and get it up the step ladder. Whew, the hard part's done.

Now the furnace is in the attic and all we have to do is move it about 30 feet to its spot. Stay on the beams so you don't fall through. Try to keep out of the insulation because it's nasty. Watch your back with those rafters--we only have a couple of feet to work in. Try not to get splinters. Be flexible because there's not much room for the furnace and 3 guys around it. Don't lose your grip or your balance. It can't be more than 135 degrees up here. Point that flashlight this way; I can't see. Okay buddies, cool, we got it in place.

I'm a little light headed and soaked with sweat. I find my way back to the attic access and just sit there a while. I can feel a little cool air. Hold on to consciousness; don't pass out! The top of the stepladder is about 4 feet below and not very stable, so I'm not about to try to get to it at this point since I might lose balance.

I'm starting to get a little less woozy and sweating a little less. My back hurts, my knees hurt, and I think I got a couple of splinters that I didn't notice at the time. All I have to do is get myself together and look "professional" when I go back down, then be ready for the next job.

I wish it were winter ... wait, no I don't.

Don't forget the HUMIDITY during that heat wave. We had dew points in the mid-70's. Something you see in Florida in the summer.

I remember that. I was on the phone with someone in Tucson, it was colder there.

To Jessejb and some others:

Do you agree with most of the things in this that I said recently:

For one example, I viewed Seattle/PCNW weather much more positively in 2009 but for 2010 and how 2011 is so far I am viewing it much more negatively.

The year 2009 had a much sunnier, drier, and warmer April, May, June, July, August, AND September as well as a much sunnier/drier December than for the year 2010 during those same months. That means the year 2009 had 7 much nicer weather months than the year 2010 did which makes a huge difference. Even just 2 months would do that.

If the weather over there ends up not being as nice as 2009 and being as bad as 2010 AGAIN, I almost don't even want to go back to live there...I seriously think Seattle/PCNW will lose some or even a lot of its population if the rest of the year of 2011 ends up being as bad as it has been so far this year and if it ends up being as bad as 2010 and not nearly as nice as 2009. Or at the very least the PCNW will lose some admiration and respect.

I have a feeling though the the rest of 2011 will be as nice as 2009 instead of being as bad as 2010.
