I think, those of us who moved to Seattle partly because of the weather and who experienced and had to put up with weather in places like Midwest, Texas, Arizona, Southeast, Florida and pretty much everywhere else in the country including most major US cities have learned to appreciate and love Seattle's weather and other great thing this region offers. PNW is a magic place to be!

That is true to a certain extend. It also reigns true for those who have lived in Seattle and moved somewhere else.

PL, yea, I know what you mean. I meant people like me who moved to Seattle partly because of the weather. Sorry it was unclear from my previous post, and I edited it. Of course, I understand that there are also a lot of people who LEFT Seattle because of the weather. As for me, I'm very happy with Seattle's weather. After living in many places, NYC including, I appreciate Seattle's / Vancouver, BC weather a lot. It works perfect for me. Add other great things this region offers, and, for me, this place easily becomes one of the best places in the country to live.

By the way, there are many posts in this and other threads from people who left Seattle and who would die to move back precisely because of the weather and pleasant year-round temperatures Seattle offers.

Do you think that's true, or are they roughly similar? I'm just asking because although I love the NW otherwise, the constant rain in Portland annoys me, and, aside from the rain, Seattle seems like a perfect city for me, so having even more rain would be frustrating, but not a deal breaker of course.

Thanks

Seattle's weather is roughly similar to Portland's. Seattle might be a tiny bit gloomier, but they get about the same percentage of sunshine hours, and downtown Portland actually gets a few more inches of rain annually than Seattle does. Portland does get a bit hotter in the summer months, and a bit colder in the winter months. Portland gets a little bit more freezing rain.
People wouldn't choose to vacation for the winter in either place.

My father regrets leaving there to a certain extent, and not just because of the climate.

I second Ira -
If you are coming to Seattle because you like the amenities, oportunities and vibe, come on up! If you are coming looking for beater weather, I would think of looking south to Eureka.

South of Eureka is more like it. Eureka get's about the same amount of rain as Seattle and is perhaps even cooler in summer.

I don't see who Seattle's weather is any worse than Portland's. They are in the same climate zone.

I wouldn't say it's worse either. Slightly different though but within the marine climate zone.

Seattle and Portland are within the Oceanic Moist climate. Cool, wet winters, mild summers. Portland is a bit further south. Seattle, the northernmost major city in the USA(besides anything in Alaska), has longer summer days than most places in the USA, and the summer is a bit sunnier than any other time. This means the weather stays nice for about 16 or 17 hours. In the winter, daylight is reduced to about 7 or 8 hours. This is the rainy part of the year. The clouds and fog makes the twilight shorter. This means in the winter, the days are dark and the nights are very long. If a person is not a fan of dark, cloudy weather, the winter migth get to that person. Me, I find something kind of interesting with it getting dark early. I would say the amount of daylight between the two cities makes a difference.
