“Two Western Washington rivers provide Seattle with the water we use every day to drink, cook, clean and water our lawns or gardens.

They are the Cedar and South Fork Tolt rivers and together they provide Seattle Public Utilities with enough water to cover about 1.5 million customers. The Cedar River and its reservoir, Chester Morse Lake, is the largest of the two sources, making up about 60% of the utility’s water supply.

The South Fork Tolt originates in north-central King County and eventually converges with the North Fork Tolt, becoming simply the Tolt River. The Cedar River watershed lies south of Interstate 90.

Which source arrives at your home depends largely on where you live.

Generally speaking, people who live north of Green Lake receive water from the Tolt system while those to the south draw from the Cedar, according to the utility’s 2022 Drinking Water Quality Report”.

Where I work in Seattle it's Cedar River water, but at home in Sammamish it's 80%+ from local aquifers, with some supplemental in summer from Seattle Public Utilities, through a contract with the Cascade Water Alliance.

80% dependence on aquifers doesn't sound like a sustainable long-term strategy.

Which is why we have the backup, but with an average 60" of rain here annually it hasn't been a problem.

All my drinking water comes from the "Brita" filter. Hopefully that is catching most of the particulates.

I drink from the Tolt river. If the Tolt Reservoir dam ever fails, the city of Carnation would be covered by a 15-foot flood. The water would rush over Carnation and then continue south and north from there.

I appreciate the reservoir, and I drink the water, but I would never live in the flood path.
