PNW weather has become one of my favorite subjects, because it is so subjective! We moved here from UTah 4 years ago, and I was told I would 'adapt' to the weather, I have totally unadapted and we are moving to Idaho next month. I agree w/ one of the previous posters re rain and humidity, I have felt much, much colder here than I ever felt in 'cold' Utah, the humidity really exacerbates the cold for me. I run to work 3 days per week to keep my sanity, but from my perspective it is bright out July, August and September and then starts raining October to June. I have found living here (I am actually in Portland) that May and June are the hardest months, as I am ready for summer, but after 4 years I finally accepted that summer really does not start until july 4th weekend.

to all those that love rain and look forward to moving to the PNW, hooray! there are oodles of people around here that love the rain and wet, gloomy climate and actively look forward to it, i am just not one of them and I dont' believe that you can 'adapt to it' (although one person told me it takes about 6 years , i just don't have another 2 years in me).

Fair enough. I'll stock up on antidepressants and a "light box" before the move.

Winter's can be hard but I like them better then summer.

Are you saying that its humid in the summers as well as the winter in Washington?

No, sallysue, the summers are not extremely humid like you'd find in other parts of the country. However, because of the underlying marine influence, when it does get hot in western Washington --mid 80's to mid 90's-- it's not as comfortable as it would be in an arid climate. But temperatures in that range are not the norm for the Seattle area during the summer.

However, as we've talked about in the past, it invariably cools down at night ...even on those 90 degree days. And it's not unusual that after a day with the temps in the 90s with clear skies, to have the next day cool, cloudy, and overcast.

The winters definitely have high relative humidity. In my opinion, that's what makes it so uncomfortable for me when the temperature is around 40 degrees as it seems so much colder. That chill seemed to go right to my bones.

I love rainy or cloudy days. I find them restful and cozy. I have lived in Connecticut all of my life. My son, who is the only immediate family that I have left, has relocated to Marina del Rey, California. He loves warm, sunny weather. I have decided that, as a newly retired teacher, who is able to go wherever I would like, that southern California is not for me. I am going to go out to check out the Oregon Coast. I want to be able to visit him more easily, but I remember thinking years ago that I would like to retire to the coast in England. The Oregon coast seems like it might be a good compromise. There are not many of us who prefer cloudy days and when I listen to the weather forecasters bemoaning the forecast, if it calls for anything but sun and heat, it makes me feel so odd! Meanwhile we have had a cool and cloudy June so far, I love it!
