Seattle is extremely clean compared to NYC. Part of it might be the age of the city. NYC has been accumulating garbage for a few hundred years. We've got a ways to go.

A couple of years ago, we were at a work event in downtown Seattle. I was walking with someone here from Atlanta. She was almost annoyed by Seattle's cleanliness.

New York is a big city. The upscale areas are relatively clean and nice while other areas are less so. There's hardly a comparison since Seattle's smaller size allows it to be maintained easier.

I think, thanks to the constant rain, Seattle is cleansed of all the grime NYC and other cities have in general. Also our garbage collectors do a good job. When I was in NYC and Wash DC, garbage was really stacked up in the street, -this encourages rats and all sorts of vermin. You will also not see cockroaches in your hotel room as you will find them in NYC.

It's not so much the rain, as the attitude of the people to not litter and to recycle, almost a fetish. Also, there is an organization called the Metropolitan Improvement District. Various agencies and big companies pay to be members, and the money is used to fund many "ambassadors" who spend the entire day cleaning up litter from the streets.
